One dataset can support more than one genuine contribution
Longitudinal cohorts, multidisciplinary projects and complex trials routinely generate several research questions. A methods validation, a clinical endpoint and a qualitative process study may warrant separate reports. Counting articles cannot determine whether fragmentation is responsible.
Salami slicing describes division that obscures the scientific whole or presents minimal variations as substantial independent contributions. There is no universal percentage of shared participants or words that settles the issue. Subject expertise is needed to compare aims, populations, methods, results and value to readers.
Warning signs must be examined together
Near-identical introductions and methods, the same primary outcomes, repeated tables and conclusions that divide one argument into thin pieces deserve scrutiny. New titles, reordered authors or different journals do not create new knowledge. Failure to cite sister papers makes the pattern more misleading.
Signals are not proof of intent. Word limits, staged data collection and genuinely different audiences may justify separation. A defensible reason should exist in the publication plan and analysis logic, rather than being invented only after an editor discovers overlap. Include planned manuscripts in that comparison.
Write a publication plan before results drive the story
For every intended paper, record its primary question, data release, outcome, responsible author group and readership. Link it to a protocol or registration where applicable. Later exploratory questions are possible, but should be labelled honestly. This makes post-hoc division of attractive results easier to recognise.
Do not reserve variables for status or ownership if the resulting papers become scientifically incomplete. Group the analyses that form one coherent argument. Authorship should follow contribution and accountability, not be manufactured by giving each collaborator a narrow output.
Version the plan when data or questions change. A new wave of collection may support a follow-up article; an extra adjustment variable usually does not create one by itself. Keep rejected outlines with a short reason so that later authors understand why analyses were combined.
Different audiences still require different questions
A statistical journal and a clinical journal may draw different lessons from one project. Each paper must specify its distinct question and identify the common dataset. Audience alone does not license the same findings to appear twice as original research.
Dissertations, conference abstracts, preprints and articles also serve different functions. A conference abstract may be a preliminary disclosure, while a preprint is typically a public version of the same work. Neither should be treated as invisible. Venue policies determine whether and how earlier versions are declared.
Make the portfolio visible to editors and readers
List submitted, accepted and published sister outputs in the cover letter and provide copies when requested. Describe shared participants and the distinct primary aim. Cite related reports where methods and results connect, not solely in a generic closing paragraph.

Test your distinction in one sentence: “Both papers use cohort X; Paper A reports the pre-specified clinical endpoint, whereas Paper B validates the measurement method against separate criteria.” If the sentence depends on vague claims such as “a slightly different perspective”, revisit the design. Preserve that sentence in the project’s publication register.
Seven release questions
- Does each paper have a substantive primary question?
- Is overlap in participants and data recorded?
- Do analytical purpose and main result differ meaningfully?
- Can each report be understood without strategically missing context?
- Are sister outputs cited and disclosed to the editor?
- Do author roles reflect actual work?
- Would one integrated article communicate the science better?
The final question protects quality. A coherent paper may serve readers better than several fragments that repeat one another and leave the complete interpretation scattered across venues.
