How to avoid plagiarism without flattening your writing.
The safest method is not a last-minute synonym swap. It is a traceable workflow that keeps your ideas, source material and citations separate from the start.
1. Capture the source before the quote
When you save an excerpt, store the author, title, publication details, URL or DOI, access date where required and the exact page or section. Label copied wording unmistakably in your notes.
2. Separate evidence from your contribution
Draft a sentence that states your point before inserting evidence. This makes it easier to see where a source supports your argument and where your own analysis begins.
3. Quote only when the wording matters
Use quotation marks or block formatting exactly as your citation style requires. A citation by itself does not turn copied wording into a quotation.
4. Paraphrase from understanding
Read the source, set it aside, explain the idea in your own structure and then compare. Keep the citation because the idea still came from the source.
5. Reconcile citations and references
Every in-text citation should lead to one unambiguous reference entry, and every reference entry should have a reason to appear. Check names, years, titles, page details and links.
6. Review figures, data and methods
Tables, images, code, survey instruments, datasets and distinctive methods may require attribution or permission even when there is little textual overlap.
7. Run a final source check
A plagiarism report can surface forgotten quotation marks, close wording and unexpected source overlap. Classify each match; do not rewrite legitimate citations simply to reduce the score.
Final ten-minute checklist
- Quoted wording is visibly marked.
- Paraphrases use a genuinely independent structure.
- Source boundaries are clear in every paragraph.
- All cited works appear in the reference list.
- Reuse of prior work is disclosed where required.
- AI-assisted steps comply with the applicable policy.
If you discover a problem
Return to the source, decide whether to quote, paraphrase or remove the passage, and repair the citation at the same time. Keep the substantive argument intact instead of disguising the overlap.
Use a source report as the final cross-check.
Review the matches one by one before submission.
